Use a Making Choices activity for follow-up. Directions: You have
heard the words Confederacy and Union in today’s read-aloud. I
am going to read several sentences. If I describe something about
the Confederacy, say, “That was the Confederacy.” If I describe
something about the Union, say, “That was the Union.”
- We fought to take Fort Sumter away from the United States
and keep it for ourselves. (That was the Confederacy.) - We made our own fl ag with thirteen stars, one for each state
that had seceded. (That was the Confederacy.) - We fought to keep all of the states together as one. (That was
the Union.) - We fought to protect the heritage of the South. (That was the
Confederacy.) - We supported Abraham Lincoln and had a fl ag with thirty-four
stars, one for each original state. (That was the Union.) - We were led by President Lincoln. (That was the Union.)
