Word Work: Trade 5 minutes
- In the read-aloud you heard, “They traveled in boats up and
down the river to trade with people from other cities.” - Say the word trade with me.
- Trade means to exchange one thing for another.
- My sister wanted me to trade my crayons for her markers.
- Have you ever traded something with someone? Try to use the
word trade when you tell about it. [Ask two or three students.
If necessary, guide and/or rephrase the students’ responses:
“I once traded... ”] - What’s the word we’ve been talking about?
Use a Drawing and Sharing activity for follow-up. Directions: Take
your paper and fold it in half. On the left side of the paper, draw a
picture showing something you have that you would be willing to
trade. On the right side of the paper, draw a picture of something
you would like to receive in return for the trade. Discuss with your
partner whether it seems like a fair trade.
Note: You may wish to make this follow-up a Sharing activity
where students talk about what they would be willing to trade and
what they would like to receive in return.
➶ Above and Beyond: For students who are able to do so, have
them write a sentence about their drawings, using the word
trade.
