In 1924, 258 competitors gathered in Chamonix, France, for the 16 events of the
first Olympic Winter Games. This small, mainly European, sports competition has
become the world’s largest global sporting event. The XXI Olympic Winter Games,
hosted in 2010 by Vancouver, British Columbia, attracted 2500 athletes, who
competed in 86 events. First introduced at the 1920 Games in Antwerp, Belgium,
the five interlocking rings on the Olympic flag symbolize unity among the nations
of Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe. (Source:www.olympic.org)
