STUDY SKILLS

Many college students juggle a difficult schedule and multiple responsibilities, includ-
ing school, work, and family demands.

Time Management Tips

N Read the syllabus for each class.Understand class policies, such as attendance,
late homework, and make-up tests. Find out how you are graded.
N Make a semester or quarter calendar. Put test dates and major due dates for all
your classes on the samecalendar. Try using a different color pen for each class.
N Make a weekly schedule. After you fill in your classes and other regular respon-
sibilities, block off some study periods. Aim for
2 hours of study for each 1 hour in class.
N Choose a regular study time and place(such as
the campus library). Routine helps.
N Make “to-do” lists.Number tasks in order of im-
portance. Cross off tasks as you complete them.
N Break big assignments into smaller chunks.
Make deadlines for each smaller chunk so that
you stay on schedule.
N Take breaks when studying.Do not try to study
for hours at a time. Take a 10-minute break each
hour or so.
N Ask for help when you need it.Talk with your
instructor during office hours. Make use of the
learning center, tutoring center, counseling of-
fice, or other resources available at your school.
