OBJECTIVES

Solving Equations by Factoring

6.5

1 Learn and use
the zero-factor
property.

2 Solve applied
problems that
require the zero-
factor property.

3 Solve a formula for
a specified variable,
where factoring is
necessary.

In Chapter 2,we developed methods for solving linear, or first-degree, equations.

Solving higher degree polynomial equations requires other methods, one of which

involves factoring.

OBJECTIVE 1 Learn and use the zero-factor property. Solving equations

by factoring depends on a special property of the number 0, called the zero-factor

property.

Zero-Factor Property

If two numbers have a product of 0, then at least one of the numbers must be 0.

If then eitherab0, a 0 or b0.
