Wonder
Shawn Mendes
Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes
is in a thoughtful and reflective mood on
his fourth studio album, on which he also
collaborates with Justin Bieber. Mendes’ new
sound feels just right for our pandemic-struck
times, as it brings much of the stillness of
quarantine itself.
FIVE FACTS:
- “I was coming off the back of a couple of
really big songs and was just so driven by my
ego,” Mendes recalls to Apple Music about his
rough patch after releasing his third studio
album in 2018. - He adds about his recent obsession
about creating hit singles: “It’s addictive...
it’s destructive. You miss out on the most
beautiful part, which is the process.” - After a period of meditating and
journaling, Mendes co-wrote the Wonder
track “Monster” with Bieber, Daniel Caesar,
Mustafa the Poet and the song’s producer
Frank Dukes. - That song became the second single to be
released from the album – after its title track. - Mendes has likened the album to an “audio
scrapbook”, adding: “It shows the things I
thought about – how fearless I was, but also
how scared I was.”
