the Peoplemay learn all that has passed for themand theirpredecessors. Now, in
songs that were once only sung in cel-ebration, I may teach you brief candles
of humanity of thePeople and your own place among
us.-CymbiirHaevault, Lorekeeper of House HaevaultA memory
is a curious thing. One can come intocon-sciousness unbidden, evoked
by an unexpected scentor the words spoken by a friend.
A memory can also beelusive, foiling all attempts to reca
ll it and sometimesrememberedonly after the hunt is abandoned, like aword on the tip
of one's tongue. Some memories pull atthe heart, weighingit down and holding it there as ananchor moors a ship. Others buoy it up
or make it flutterjoyously like the wings of a bird. Some
memories lie inwait like predators, ready to leap out when
the mind orthe heart is vulnerable. Some linger like scars, not al-ways
visible but ever-present.Perhapsmore so than any other race, elvesare famil-iar with
all aspects of memory. From birth, elvesdon'ts leep but instead enter a t
rance when they need to rest.In this state, elves remain
aware of their surroundingswhile
immersing themselves in memories. Whatan elfremembersduring this reverie depends largelyon howlong theelf has lived, and the events of the lives thattheelf's soul has experienced before.
CHILDHOOD
Much has been made of the
relative fecundity of humanscompared to elves. Ignorant folk
wonder how elves canlive so long
, yet have so few children. They cannotknowwhat it means to anelf to usher a child into the world. They cannot understand how a birth is botha joy and asorrow, a reunion anda parting. Each birth representsan elf soul that has been to Ar-vandor and returned. Mortalelves cannot know if it isthe soul of someone recently dead or someone who diedmillennia ago. They cannoteven be certain it is an elfof the sameworld. The only assurance they haveis thatit is an elfof their own kind, for when the primal elveswent against Corellon and tookpermanent shapes, theychose this fate for themselves. How many elves are born to whichparents or in anygiven generationis a topic studied by elves in the hopeof discerning somesign from Corellon or others of theSeldarine. AerdrieFaenya, the winged goddess of airand sky, is thought to ferry souls fromArvandor into theworld, bringing them down from the heavensto begintheir mortal lives anew.A decade in which many elvesare born across the worldis thought to be a harbingerof danger that great numbersof elves will be neededto withstand. In contrast,if an elven community goesa centuryor longer without a new birth, memberstakethis asa sign that the community has stagnatedandmust disband.Becauseof the rarity of e lf births, siblings might beseparated inage by decades, or even a century or more. Thus, few elvesgrow up playing with brothers or sistersof similar age and instead rely on friendsfor the devel-opment of their social skills. In exceedinglyrare cases,a birth might produce twins or-scarceryet- triplets. These offspring, whichthe elves refer to as soul sib-lings, are believed tohave a special, intertwined destinyCHAPTER2 I EL\'ES37
