Do we still need cookbooks? That’s the
question Yasmin Fahr explored last issue
[p50]. You answered with a resounding YES

FROM: HARRIET ELEY
By a strange coincidence, I had a similar
conversation with a colleague pre-lockdown.
She remarked, “I’d basically given up on cookery
books and just used the internet, but I’d forgotten
how nice it is to flick through an actual cookery
book. I think I’ll start buying them again!”
I was baffled. Give up on cookery books? You
might as well give up on happy memories.
I grew up in a house full of books. Until
I moved out I didn’t realise the true worth of my
mum’s cookery book collection. These last few
weeks in lockdown have brought home how
much we all take simple pleasures for granted.
As I write this letter, I am in my flat in London
when I should be at my mum’s for the Easter
weekend. If everything was normal, there’s
a 99 per cent chance we’d be sat in her kitchen,
taking down the old friends from the shelves and
debating which way to go with the Sunday lamb.
As long as people remain passionate about
good cooking and good eating there will always
be a healthy appetite for good cookery books.
