Delicious Australia – (07)July 2019

(Comicgek) #1

East Hampton Farmers’ Market for
‘ugly-delicious’ organic produce heralded
by local chefs, as well as pretty buckets
of medicinal herbs such as valerian,
yarrow and chamomile.
Located in downtown Riverhead,
The Preston House & Hotel is a
heritage building once owned by
Henry H. Preston, the first salaried
sheriff of Suffolk County. The cosy
boutique accommodation is neatly
furnished, featuring original hardware,
fireplaces, barn doors and floors of
the 1905 building.
Well-situated, the hotel
isn’t too far from the
wine country on
the North Fork and
close enough to the
Hamptons on the South
Fork. The Preston’s
restaurant is a
destination in its own right, with head
chef Matty Boudreau running a tight ship.
Tender slices of Point Judith calamari are
lightly seared and served with pretty
curls of watermelon radish – it’s a perfect

summer’s night dish alongside
chilli verde mussels poached
in a bright-green jalapeno
broth, and garlic crostini
to dip. Stay for breakfast,
there’s house-made smoked
bacon on the menu.
For a tranquil retreat to
unplug from the noise of the
city, stick to
the North Fork
of the island. Orient,
Greenport and
East Marion are
quiet seaside towns,
where slow and
steady wins the race.
Stay at the
waterfront Sound View hotel in
Greenport, a small fishing village,
where rooms are simple but chic, with
furnishings in coastal hues. There’s also
an unobstructed view of the Long Island

“THE ISLAND IS
A SWEET REFUGE
FROM THE
UNRELENTING
PACE OF
NEW YORK CITY.”

CLOCKWISE FROM
BELOW: get your fresh
produce from roadside
stalls; The Village Cheese
shop; warm and inviting
interiors at Shinn Estate;
seafood sensation
Bigelow’s; bag a pretzel
bagel at Lynbrook.
