retire the Aunt Jemima brand, syrup maker Michele Hoskins’s
business exploded. People love her syrup (she has been selling
it in the Chicago area for 36 years), and they love supporting
a Black businesswoman. Michele uses a recipe from her
great-great-great-grandmother America Washington, who was
enslaved on a Mississippi plantation and made a sweet spread
for the owner’s family using honey, butter and cream. Safeway
and Albertsons now sell Michele’s three flavors nationwide.
