juiceandvodka,saidtohavebeenmixedinthe
early1920sbyFernandPetiotat Harry’sNewYork
BarinParis.TheFrenchbartenderclaimedtohave
beenexperimentingwithvodka-basedcocktailsat
thetime,asthespiritwasbecomingwidelyavailable
duetoaninfluxofRussiansarrivinginFrance
followingtherevolution.In1934,Petiottravelled
toNewYorktotakeupthepostofheadbartender
at theStRegisHotel.There,heis saidtohavefinessed
thedrink,addinglemonjuice,Worcestershiresauce,
Tabasco,andsaltandpepper,creatingthespicy,
savourycocktailweknowandlovetoday.
