outsideoftheirimmediatefamily.
Thisissueis dedicatedtofamilyin
allitsmanyforms.It’saboutcoming
togethertosharestories,adventures
and,ofcourse,food.Therecipesin
thesepagesaremadetoshare– with
friends, family and whanau.

rowingupoverseas,I learnt
fairlyearlyonthatfamily
is morethanjustthose
whoshareyourDNA.
BirthdaysandChristmaseswere
spentwitha widevarietyoffriends,
whilegrandparentsandcousins
werefriendlystrangerswhomade
a briefappearanceeveryyearorso.
WhenI movedtoNewZealandasa
teenager,I wasintroducedtotheMaori
conceptofwhanau.Typicallytranslated
as“family”,whanaucanalsoreferto
a muchbroadernetwork,extending
toyourwidercommunityandthose
whosupportyou.Anyonewhocomes
togetherfora sharedpurpose,from
workmatestosportteams,might
considerthemselveswhanau.
I’vealwayslovedthisinterpretation
andapproachtofamily.Butit takes
onnewrelevanceaswefacea raft
oftravelrestrictionsinthecoming
months.Manyofus,myselfincluded,
willbeunabletoseeour families for
the next little while.
