Nietzsche and Sartre 107
In Existentialism is Humanism Sartre contends that existen
tialism is not a pessimistic philosophy, but rather one that lauds
action, elevates man as a creator of values, rejoices in the fact that
man makes the laws for man, and finally places man at the center
of the universe as he ought to be. One of his last statements about
his philosophy maintains that man can find self-fulfillment in
this life.
