Try using symmetry or produce random layouts
You can produce traditional-style flower-press pieces using symmetry as a
guide, and keeping similar colours together, or you could go totally random, with lots
of colours all bunched together, For these shots, I placed stems at the bottom of the
image and leaves at the top, to maintain the connection with nature. The results can
be endless, and you could produce a large selection of different images and styles.2
Shoot at an angle
You don’t have to shoot from directly
above over the lightbox. Try using a macro
lens, and shooting at an angle at f/2.8 to
get a sense of depth – sharp at the front
and out of focus towards the back.3
Shoot for an occasion
You can shoot your own special one-off pieces, maybe
for weddings, birthdays or anniversaries. The heart-shaped
shot using blue flowers was assembled with Valentine’s Day
in mind. Then you could frame them, which would make
a perfect print to put on your wall, or print out your
own personalised card for your loved one.4
Ice ice baby
Try putting some of
your flowers in water and
freezing them, then place the
ice block over the lightbox to
produce some Impressionist-
