‘Little Legend of the
Mist’ by David Phillipson
“I took this image early in November.
I was fortunate enough to have
taken my camera on a spur-of-the-
moment walk with the children at
our local country park to let them
burn off some energy. As the sun
started to set, the mist rolled in.
“It’s a portrait of one of my sons
playing in the river. As is standard,
his Wellington boots are
submerged! Originally my other
son was in the frame, but it worked
better once cropped. I also lightened
some shadows slightly in Lightroom
and converted it to mono.”
Digital Camera says: Here’s
some solid evidence that you should
always take a camera with you when
you head out for the day. (Just don’t
live your life through a lens.) This is
a modern-day classic, ready for the
wall: great exposure all round, and
the slight boost in the shadows
allows just enough detail in the
darker areas to come out. We’re
enjoying the square crop, which
looks a well-justified choice
in post-production.

‘Purple Rain’ by
Marie Brook-Smith
“Of 150 shots trying to capture water
as it splashes, this is the one I am most
pleased with. I suspended a food bag
of water with xanthan gum mixed in
to make the consistency thicker, plus
some blue food colouring, over a bowl
of water. I focused on an object placed
in the bowl where the drips would fall,
and switched to manual focus. After
piercing a hole in the bag, I started
shooting, using a flash facing the
backdrop, trying to catch the water as
it hit the water and bounced back up.”
Digital Camera says: Wow,
Marie! 150 shots... but well worth
the patience and effort in the end!
This skill at first looks quite easy, but
it takes a perfectly timed moment
to freeze the perfect droplet form
into a human-like entity.
