For the last two years,
palm warblers have landed in the same Norway
spruces about 15 feet from my patio. It’s so lucky
because I had never seen this bird before!

This mourning
dove was certainly
comfortable and content
perching in my backyard
in Michigan. It let me get
close as it preened and
ruffled its feathers.

Birds preen to adjust
the way their barbules,
tiny strands of feathers,
interlock. This maintains
their water-resistant coat.
