  • Upper and lower control arms are connected to the vehicle’s frame at one
end using rubber or steel bushings. At the other end, ball joints bolt to the
steering knuckle (to which the wheels are attached). This allows for turning
right and left and for up and down movement (roadway jostle).

  • The steering knuckle allows for turning and up-and-down movement. In
addition, the wheel’s hub rides on bearings that ride on the spindle portion of
the knuckle. The wheel bearings are sealed and packed with grease (for
lubrication and cooling) on the spindle.

  • Ball joints provide the moveable link that connects all the parts of the system,
allowing for turning and road movement.

  • Sway bars stabilize the vehicle’s body when making a turn. The sway bar is a
spring steel bar that spans the width of the vehicle’s undercarriage. It is
secured to the bottom of the frame and attaches to the control arms via the use
of sway bar links. Sway bars prevent the vehicle’s body from dipping when
    turning.
