The brake rotor (or disc) is the smooth surface that the pads ride against. When brake pedal pressure is
applied, the pads clamp down on the rotors, creating friction and stopping the wheels from spinning. When
the friction material on the brake pads wear down from use, the rotors become scored and thus ineffective in
stopping the vehicle. If too much metal has worn off, the rotor must be discarded for safety’s sake. If only mild
scoring is present and enough metal is present, then resurfacing rather than replacing is an option.
