Here’s how the brake drum fits over the brake assembly. It fits over wheel lugs and firmly against the hub
assembly. Then it is firmly tightened against the whole assembly when the wheels are bolted into place. Then
as the wheels spin, the drum spins around the brake assembly. When the brakes are applied, the shoes push
out against the drum. This creates friction and thus stops the rotation of the wheels.
