Here is a frontal view of a typical drum brake setup. The friction material is the long brake shoes, which run
down each side of the setup. At the top are wheel cylinders. These are hydraulic actuators that push the brake
shoes out against the drum when the brake is applied. The shoes are anchored to the backing plate by anchor
springs. Return springs at the top of the setup ensure the shoes return to their respective seats when the brake
is released. When the brake is applied, the shoes are pushed out against the smooth surface of the drum,
which rides over the entire setup.
