Tom,

Q I own a Grand AM GT 2002. The ABS light, the “Trac Off” light, and

the “Service Vehicle Soon” lights are on. The brakes seem fine. I am the only
driver of the car and have kept up with services until these lights. I
mentioned it to a fellow who said that if I don’t fill up the gas tank until the
low fuel warning light comes on (this is my pattern), then the sensor goes bad
and that may be what is causing the three warning lights to come on. What do
you think? I am now filling up at the gas pump when the gauge reads a
quarter tank.

Joyce,

A Filling the gas tank or leaving it low has nothing to do with the lights that

are on. These are related to the ABS brakes and Traction Control systems, so
manipulation of the gas tank level isn’t going to shut them off. The ABS
braking and Traction Control systems operate through the brakes. There’s a
problem with one of these systems, probably the ABS system. Commonly,
when an ABS wheel speed sensor goes bad it will cause both lights to
illuminate. The ABS system will need to be scanned and the defective wheel
speed sensor identified and replaced. Until the problem is repaired, the light
will stay on and these systems will not operate properly.
