Chapter 7
Ignition and Fuel Delivery Systems
In order to run, an engine must have the precise amount of fuel and ignition
supplied to the combustion chamber at exactly the right time. Years ago, engines’
ignition and fuel delivery systems were quite different than they are today.
Primitive ignition systems used ignition points, condensers, and distributors.
Fuel delivery systems included mechanical fuel pumps and carburetors. With the
advent of computerized cars, things have changed a lot. Electronic fuel injection
replaced the carburetor, and computerized ignition systems replaced distributors
and point ignition systems. It’s been an interesting evolution and one that’s
worth taking a closer look at.
