THE BATTERY
The cold weather is a huge factor in battery failure. A battery in marginal (weak)
condition will fail the first time a cold snap hits, so make sure you start the
winter season with a strong battery.
What other factors can contribute to battery failure? What tests can be done to
reveal potential problems with the charging and starting system and avoid costly
and inconvenient episodes? Let’s take a close look at the answer to these
questions.
Vibration: Another factor that can contribute to battery failure is excessive
vibration. When a battery is allowed to vibrate and jiggle around under the hood,
the plates within it can come loose, causing internal electrical shorts and battery
failure. The vibrating motion can even wear a hole into the battery case, which
results in the loss of acid from the cells. To avoid these problems, make sure
your car’s battery is secure within its case, using the proper securing brackets.
