Lift the battery free, keeping it level to avoid possibility of spilling acid. Any inexpensive battery lifting strap
(available at auto parts stores) makes removing a top terminal battery much easier. If your battery has top
terminals but you use the side ones, as shown here, keep the top terminals capped to eliminate the risk that a
metal tool or part could short across them and create a fire hazard.
