Water pumps also vary in shape and size, depending on engine design and cooling system specifications. While
they vary in shapes and design, the basic principal of pumping water is fundamental to water pumps. Every
water pump has a shaft that drives a vane of some sort. This vane combined with a sealed system and
channeling of the coolant into the engine is what creates coolant flow. Water pump drives are mostly
mechanical by the engine either via the timing belt or a drive belt. Some engines have an electric drive, but
that is usually found on high-performance engines where the builder doesn’t want power drawn from the
engine by the water pump.
