DRIVERS ASK, TOM ANSWERS: COOLING

PROBLEMS SOLVED

Tom,

Q I own a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix. It has no water leaks and no problem

with overheating, and yet the engine coolant light flashes on and off. I
recently replaced the coolant thinking that might solve the problem, but it did
not. Could the sensor be bad?

Cecil,

A Yes, it is possible that the coolant level sensor is bad. If the system has

been checked, levels are good, and the system holds pressure when pressure
tested, then you might want to replace the switch (providing you are sure the
wiring and electrical plug are okay). The low coolant module (switch) is
located on the left side of the radiator and can be changed in about a half
hour of “shop time.” I express replacement in terms of “shop time” because,
if you’re going to replace the sensor yourself, tools and equipment and
experience can affect installation time. Good luck!
