Tom,

Q It is my understanding that coolant (antifreeze) will corrode an aluminum

block engine by an acid that is either in the coolant or becomes present over
time in the cooling system. If I mixed baking soda with the coolant, would
the soda reduce the acidic content of the coolant and slowdown the corrosion
action?

Ray,

A You did not tell me the year, make, or model of the vehicle. Based on my

vast knowledge of vehicles, I will assume you are referring to a GM vehicle
using Dexcool coolant. Yes, when the system is allowed to go low over time
and is left in too long, acid will build up. This results in corrosion of the
aluminum or head gaskets.

The best way to thwart this action is to flush and refill the cooling
system every two years or 24,000 miles (whichever comes first). Baking soda
will have no effect on this condition. I would relegate the baking soda to your
refrigerator to eliminate offensive odors or use it in the culinary baking arts.
