POWER STEERING FLUID

Like the transmission fluid, the power steering fluid lubricates, cools, and creates
hydraulic pressure (which produces the power-assisted steering). When checking
it, take note of three things: color, consistency, and smell (do you see a pattern
developing here?).

Color

The steering fluid should be red or clear. If its black or dark colored, this is an
indication that it has been overheated. Also, look for metal flakes. If present, this
means that the rack or power steering pump are worn and are grinding
themselves to pieces. You will have to replace the pump or steering rack and
perform a power steering flush. Sometimes if you catch the problem early you
can save one or the other component.
