Acid rain is a killer of automotive finishes. When allowed to sit on your car’s finish, acid rain magnifies the
sun’s rays causing the toxic mix to etch into the clear coat layer of your paint. The clear coat is a protective
clear finish applied at the factory that when exposed to acid rain is eaten away. The consequence is that the
color coat becomes exposed to the acid rain as well as the sun’s UV rays. This fades the paint and eventually
eats through the primer coat, thus exposing the bare metal beneath to rust.
Wax your car: A sure shot way to protect your car’s finish is to apply a good
coat of wax twice a year and use a carnauba-based wax. This type of wax is
tough and provides protection from harmful UV rays. For hand application apply
the wax in a swirl pattern, let it dry, then buff clean with a soft dry cloth. If you
use an electric buffer you must make sure you apply the wax on the slowest
speed setting. If the buffer is moving too fast, it’s easy to burn through the clear
coat and paint. Bodywork experts repair a lot of paint jobs that were damaged
from using a buffer at too high a speed or excessive downward pressure. When
