position. With the timing chain in proper position, the timing chain
cover could be installed with a gasket.
The valves and valve springs have been assembled on the heads
using a valve spring compressor in the reverse order in which they
were removed. Once the valves and valve springs are installed, the
heads can be reinstalled on the engine.
Lifters
One of the most important rules in installing a valve train is to never
combine old parts with new parts. A new camshaft requires new lifters
and vice versa. However, old parts in good condition can be reused, as
long as no new parts are introduced. Herman placed cam and lifter
assembly lubricant in the cavities for the lifters, as well as on the side
and bottom of each lifter. He was careful not force the lifters into
position; they should go into place with very little pressure. Now was
also the time to set the push rods through the heads and into the lifters.
Because this engine has hydraulic lifters, there is no need to adjust the
lifters once they are installed.
