Surgery may be recommended for patients who do not
respond after a period of time to non-operative therapy.
Some examples are :
- curves above 50 degrees
- severe impairment in everyday activity
- experience a worsening of lung function or neurology
- the inability to stand erect to perform regular life tasks
Different types of surgical procedures may be used, such
as:
- Laminectomy, where a portion of one of the bones in the
spine (vertebrae) is removed to alleviate pressure on the
affected nerve. - Discectomy is where a section of one of the discs
between the vertebrae is removed to relieve pressure on a
nerve. - Spinal fusion is where two or more vertebrae are fused
together to stabilize, reinforce, and straighten the nerve.
