Surgery may be recommended for patients who do not
respond to non-surgical therapy after a long time.
Some examples are :
- have curves that are over 50 degrees
- sense a decline in lung function or neurology
- not being able to do everyday tasks like standing up
Adults with scoliosis experience a lot of pain, different
types of surgical procedures may be used to help, such as:
- Laminectomy, to alleviate pressure on the troubled nerve
one portion of one of the bones in vertebrae is extracted. - Discectomy, is where in between the vertebrae a section
of one of the discs is removed to ease the pressure on the
affected nerve. - Spinal fusion, is where the nerve is reinforced, supported,
and straightened by fusing together two or more
vertebrae.
