Designer Speak

Sanjyt Syngh

(Founder and Interior Designer,

Sanjyt Syngh)

Designing to you is...

Very personal. It’s an expression of

your taste. And if it doesn’t create

conversations, it’s not design. It must

have a story. A lot of design is

story-telling.

Your inspiration...

There are many of people and

experiences that inspire me. I have

learned so many things from so

many different people and I consider

all of them icons because they’ve

changed my life and the way I think

in so many ways.

Current design trends...

The strongest trend we are seeing

these days is Maximalism. I feel it’s a

reaction against Minimalism. I love

to say, ‘More is More’ contrasting

with the minimalist belief ‘Less is

More.’ Another major trend we are

seeing is colour. You see a lot of soft

colours, blush, dusty pinks. It is very

gender-neutral.

Your designs are a reflection of...

I live design. It is very difficult for

me to differentiate between Sanjyt

Syngh as a person and Sanjyt Syngh

as a designer. My designs are a

reflection of me and are expressed

through so many mediums. I call
myself a mix of influences.

Your journey so far...
As a child I was always inquisitive
about how things were made. I
would invariably be sitting under
or inside pieces of furniture to
figure out the construction details.
I studied interior and spatial design
at Chelsea College of Art & Design
at the University of Arts, London.
Later, I moved to New Delhi, and
after spending the first couple of
years consulting with different firms,
I formed SANJYT SYNGH : Interior/

Design in 2009.

Your most valuable
project till date...
Each project has a
different design language
ranging from eclectic
luxe to Miami chic,
maximalism to Swiss
cottage. This is one of the
most difficult questions
to answer.

Your advice to young
upcoming designers...
Stay true to your aesthetics
and do not blindly follow
trends. Make them your
own. Marry them with your
aesthetics and create your
own language. Another
thing to keepinmind is –
do not repeat.tIHG
