LEARNING OBJECTIVES■ Add colour with digital art
■■ Use out-of-register shapes Create a balanced design
L
ast month I showed you how I used my photograph of Wiveton Hall in
for two different takes on the same Norfolk (above right) as a reference
subject: a pen and ink sketch (below) and a line-and-wash watercolour (below right).
With plenty of time on my hands during the lockdown measures, I then went on
to use the sketch as the starting point for a very different coloured version using
digital ‘colour blocks’. One photograph, three times the fun!
called Procreate for iPad (£9.99 from the I used an iPad, a stylus and an app
iTunes App Store), but I believe other
tablet and software combinations work similarly. If you’ve had a go at digital art before, I hope you’ll enjoy working along
with my step-by-step demonstration, either by using my Wiveton Hall
photograph to produce your own line drawing, or by scanning mine to use as a
readymade digital image. If you’ve never used your tablet for
digital art before, I hope you’ll be tempted to try it for the fi rst time. I
suggest taking some time to familiarise yourself with your app’s main user
interface and functions fi rst, such as through online manuals and user

Part 2Procreate, to add colour to a traditional ink sketch on paper Follow step by step as Tony Underhill uses a digital app,
TONY'S TOP TIPS 1 Make sure your sketch layer is set
to ‘multiply’ (to make it transparent) and that it sits above most, if not all,
of the other layers. 2 Try changing the order and/or opacity
of individual layers to see what happens. 3 If you’re new to digital art, be
patient and stick with it. 4 There’s no right or wrong way
so have fun!
forums, YouTube tutorials, and simple trial-and-error experimentation. Begin
with the basics, build up gradually and treat it as a voyage of discovery. Layers
might sound complex at fi rst, but just think of them as a stack of overhead
projector transparencies, each of which can be changed, re-ordered or discarded
separately; together they form a single composite image.
Desmond MacCarthy, the owner of Last, but not least, thank you to
Wiveton Hall (www.wivetonhall.co.uk), for allowing me to use my photograph of
the hall for the purposes of this article. LP
