t STAGE TWO

I used clean colours, clean

brushes and lots of clean

water to create the sky. Even

the slightest contamination

of colour can mess this up. I

continued the colours as a pale

wash over the remainder of the

painting

p STAGE THREE

I added some background detail

before the shadow wash, using

the fine point of a size 2 squirrel

mop brush. This technique helps

to soften the shapes and pushes

them back into the distance

t STAGE FOUR

With a size 5 mop brush I

washed cobalt blue and alizarin

crimson over the foreground

and distance, leaving behind

some highlights on the rocks
