PRACTICAL
p STAGE TWO
With a mix of yellow and rose madder I painted in the warm areas
around the edges of the clouds and immediately above the hill line.
I didn’t worry about being too precise at this stage as I would be using
pastels later on – these will overlay any unwanted painted areas
p STAGE THREE
To paint in the blue sky behind the clouds I mixed manganese
blue with a touch of cobalt blue. I then moved down into the hill
and foreground with the same wash and added some orange and
manganese violet lower down
u STAGE FIVE
A strong mix of helio turquoise and
quinacridone gold was used to block in
the dark foreground area. I then removed
all the masking fluid from the surface
and, with the same mix and using my
rigger I ‘ticked’ the tree lines and fences
into the background hill
DETAIL A
With this closeup you can see how the
colours merge into each other when
keeping the paint wet
p STAGE FOUR
To get some basic colour into the cloud
formations, I started with ultramarine,
cobalt blue and orange to construct the
cloud areas, keeping the washes wet
so the colours merged into each other.
Remember – this is just laying down a
foundation for the ensuing pastel work
