James Paterson creates timeless looks with Serif’s Affinity Photo

01 COPY IN THE PORTRAIT
Open the supplied images into Affinity. Go
to the portrait and hit Cmd/Ctrl+C to copy,
then go to the frame and hit Cmd/Ctrl+V
to paste. Next, go to the Layers panel and
rename the layers as ‘face’ and ‘frame’.
Drag the ‘face’ layer to the bottom.

04 BLUR THE PORTRAIT
Highlight the bottom layer, then go to
Layer>New Live Filter Layer>Depth of
Field Filter. In settings choose Elliptical
Blur then up the Radius to 25px. Move the
centre over the face and adjust the size
of it to blur the edges of the portrait.

02 CONVERT TO MONO

Highlight the bottom layer, then click the

circular Create Adjustment Layer icon at

the bottom of the Layers panel and choose

Black and White. Click ‘Picker’ in the

settings and drag left or right over parts

of the image to control the luminosity.

05 ADD VINTAGE TONING

Add a Gradient Map layer. Click on the

points to add colours, and double-click the

line to add more. Drag them left or right to

change the tonal range. We used four

points (1: H0 S0 L6, 2: H34 S8 L29, 3:

H34 S12 L55 , 4: H0 S0 L100).

03 ADD A WET TEXTURE

Copy-and-paste wet_plate_2 in. Next, go

to the Layers panel, click the blending

mode drop-down menu at the top and

choose Overlay. Lower the layer opacity to

60%. You can click the tick to toggle the

layer off and on to assess the opacity.

06 MAKE IT GRAINY

Copy-and-paste wet_plate_4 into the

image then go to the blending mode

drop-down and choose Multiply. Lower the

layer opacity to 65%. Highlight the bottom

layer and go to Layer>New Live Filter

Layer>Add Noise. Increase to about 25%.
