HONORABLE MENTION
“The pathfinders of yesterday were blazing a trail across the wild west with very few amenities. However, in
spite of this they still enjoyed family activities and playfulness. Circa 1912, my friend’s family migrated west to
make a new home in New Mexico’s Hondo Valley. The casual, relaxed nature of this photograph, taken as they
journeyed through the eastern part of the state, stands in stark contrast to the more typical stiff formal portraits
characteristic of the day. The family picnics in the shade of their wagon while the little girls play in the grass with
their parasols. This migratory spirit is still in us today both out of curiosity as well as necessity, manifesting in those
who backpack through the mountains or RV across the country as well as those who must follow work through
the seasons or emigrate away from persecution. Under many circumstances, home truly is wherever you are.”
