“Untied”
41" x 43" x ½ " • ROXANNE SCHWARTZ • BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA
“Vintage repurposed bowties weave across the shirting background. Hanging, they loosen and form a shadow layer against the shirting and
wall. Quilting lines echo the tie shapes with horizontal and vertical ‘ghost’ tie shapes. Men’s shirting fabric, curved corners, and sepia borders
also evoke the past and a sense of loss—bittersweet memories of a young father’s early death. The bottom edge lets go of the tie ends, again
suggesting a life unfinished. Yet the family remains stitched together. We smile at the 1950s fabric and labels; an amusing peek back in sartorial
history.”
Vintage silk and cotton bowties, recycled commercial cotton; appliquéd, pieced, machine quilted, hand stitched
