As I learned more ways to use
fabrics and thread to create three-
dimensional art, texture became the
motivating force for my art designs.
My ocean reefs, which were inspired by
growing up near the ocean in Florida,
are a wonderful example of how I use
multiple fi bers to create texture that
springs to life with sea fans made of
lace or thread paint; plants and coral
that are created from silk ribbon and
specialty threads, beads, and
decorative hand stitches; and, of
course, I must add multi-color fi sh
molded from fabric to make the reef
realistic.
After creating my business Sew
Unique Art in 2007, I began
showcasing in local galleries and arts
and crafts festivals. I was surprised by
how many people had never been
exposed to fi ber art. I found that these
venues opened doors to connect to
people and have fun discussions about
creativity, fi bers, and a desire to learn.
These experiences led me to teach
classes at various art centers and quilt
guilds, showing adults and older
children how to use their imagination
to create small works of their own. I’m
now beginning to offer online classes
as well.
Throughout the years, my
art has received awards
and has been recognized
through both the
traditional art world and
the fi ber art world, but
what I have enjoyed the
most—and hope to
always enjoy—is the
spark of creativity and
joy that fi ber art can
bring. I want to show
people it’s never too late
to be creative.
