“Green Earth”
ELIZABETH FERRY PEKINS • LAMPASAS, TEXAS
“Recycling is part of what I do to help keep the Earth
green. Th ere are certain plastic items that our recycling
plant will not accept so I collect them. I save every snip
of thread and fabric as well to avoid putting them in
the trash. I challenged myself to use items that were
already thrown on my studio table near the recycle bins.
Th ese items often fi nd homes in my art so they do not
get sent to the landfi ll. In this quilt I used plastic bags,
plastic bread bag closures, embroidery fl oss, thread, yarn,
discarded sari silk, polyester roving, cotton, alcohol ink,
and interfacing; I hand stitched and hand appliquéd and
then machine quilted.”
“My Summer Garden”
ROBIN DESMAN SPINDT • TUCSON, ARIZONA
“My fi rst step in creating this quilt was
drawing the trellis and then painting the
background with Inktense pencils. Th en I
created the vegetables freehand drawing
with micro stitches on my sewing machine.
My summer garden has Japanese eggplant,
cucumbers, tomatoes, and corn. Th ere is
nothing like picking fresh corn from a stalk
and eating it.”
