RequirementsTraceability Matrix
Therequirementstraceabilitymatrixisagridthatlinksproductrequirementsfromtheirorigintothe
deliverablesthatsatisfythem.Theimplementationofarequirementstraceabilitymatrixhelpsensure
thateachrequirementaddsbusinessvaluebylinkingittothebusinessandproject objectives.It
providesameanstotrackrequirementsthroughouttheprojectlifecycle,helpingto ensurethat
requirementsapprovedintherequirementsdocumentationaredeliveredattheendof theproject.
Finally,itprovidesastructureformanagingchangestotheproductscope.
Tracingrequirementsincludes,butisnotlimitedto:
o Business needs, opportunities, goals, andobjectives;
o Projectobjectives;
o Project scope and WBSdeliverables;
o Productdesign;
o Productdevelopment;
o Test strategy and test scenarios;and
o High-level requirements to more detailedrequirements.
Attributes associated with each requirement can be recorded in the requirements traceability
matrix.Theseattributeshelpdefinekeyinformationabouttherequirement.Typicalattributesused in
therequirementstraceabilitymatrixmayincludeauniqueidentifier,atextualdescriptionofthe
requirement,the rationale forinclusion, owner, source,priority,version,current status(such as
active, canceled, deferred, added, approved, assigned, completed), and status date. Additional
attributestoensurethattherequirementhasmetstakeholders'satisfactionmayincludestability,
