Project Risk Management Processes


Project Risk Management includes the processes of conducting risk management planning,
identification,analysis,responseplanning,andcontrollingriskonaproject.Theobjectivesofproject
riskmanagementaretoincreasethelikelihoodandimpactofpositiveevents,and decreasethe
likelihoodandimpactofnegativeeventsintheproject.


Figure 11 - 1 provides an overview of the Project Risk Management processes, which are asfollows:


1.PlanRiskManagement-Theprocessofdefininghowtoconductriskmanagementactivitiesfora
project.


2.IdentifyRisks-Theprocessofdeterminingwhichrisksmayaffecttheprojectanddocumenting their
characteristics.


3.PerformQualitativeRiskAnalysis-Theprocessofprioritizingrisksforfurtheranalysisoractionby
assessingandcombiningtheirprobabilityofoccurrenceandimpact.


4.PerformQuantitativeRiskAnalysis-Theprocessofnumericallyanalyzingtheeffectofidentified risks
onoverallprojectobjectives.


5.PlanRiskResponses-Theprocessofdevelopingoptionsandactionstoenhanceopportunitiesandto
reducethreatstoprojectobjectives.


6.ImplementRiskResponses-Theprocessofimplementingpredefinedriskresponsesasrisksoccuron

StrategiesforThreats


Threestrategies,whichtypicallydealwiththreatsorrisksthatmayhavenegativeimpactsonproject
objectivesiftheyoccur,are:avoid,transfer,andmitigate.Thefourthstrategy,accept,canbeusedfor
negative risksor threats as well as positive risksor opportunities. Eachof theserisk response
strategieshasvariedanduniqueinfluenceontheriskcondition.Thesestrategiesshouldbechosen to
matchtherisk’sprobabilityandimpactontheproject’soverallobjectives.Avoidanceand mitigation
strategies are usuallygoodstrategiesforcritical riskswith highimpact,whiletransference and
acceptanceareusuallygoodstrategiesforthreatsthatarelesscriticalandwithlowoverallimpact.
