Sasol is commissioning a world-scale
petrochemical complex that will triple its
U.S. chemical production capacity and
add more than 700 new jobs. “Louisiana offers proximity
to energy infrastructure, access to low-cost feedstock,
product delivery capability, and a favorable business
climate,” says Mike Thomas, senior vice president of
North American operations. “We attribute our successes
to collaborative partnerships we’ve cultivated at the state
and federal levels.”
The star of the natural gas market right now isliquefied natural gas (LNG), exports of which have
been the fastest-growing source of demand in that
category since 2016. And deliveries are expected
to expand going forward. Louisiana happens to be
leading U.S. export growth in this category.
Venture Global LNG is currently constructing a
10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) export facil-
ity called Calcasieu Pass LNG south of Lake
Charles on the Calcasieu Ship Channel. It is
also developing the 20 MTPA Plaquemines
LNG facility south of New Orleans on the Mis-
sissippi River, and it has just announced plans
for another 20 MTPA LNG export project on
the Mississippi called Delta LNG, along with an
associated 287-mile pipeline. Its LNG custom-
ers include supermajor oil companies such as Shell
and BP along with European utilities and national oil
companies, but it is strongly committed to hiring local
and supporting Louisiana communities.
The processing industry is also going strong in Baton
Rouge, home to the only site in the world where every
chemical product in ExxonMobil’s portfolio is manufac-
tured. And the city is making major moves on infrastruc-CHENIERE ENERGY’S
