NTERPRISES ARE LOOKING TO

reduce the complexity of their
information technology (IT) environ-
ments. They’re also aiming to cut
costs, increase effi ciency, and
boost agility. Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI)
platforms can help them achieve all of these goals—
even as they launch new digital initiatives such as
artifi cial intelligence (AI), wireless 5G, edge comput-
ing, and the Internet of things (IoT).
Among the biggest benefi ts of HCI is that it helps
organizations build private clouds and move data
and workloads to the public cloud easily, while at
the same time reducing IT complexity by combin-
ing the management of computing, storage, and
networks. HCI also has the potential to transform
corporate data center operations and help compa-
nies gain a competitive advantage by running much
more effi cient IT operations.

Not surprisingly, the market for these solu-
tions has grown dramatically over the past few
years, as companies of all sizes and in virtually all
industries aim to revamp their IT operations. And
demand for the technology is likely to continue
growing as it matures and as awareness of hy-
perconverged infrastructure expands.
In a 2018 report, research fi rm International
Data Corporation (IDC) said worldwide market
revenue for converged systems increased 10%
year over year, to $3.5 billion during the second
quarter of 2018. According to IDC, HCI solutions
helped drive the market expansion due in part to
HCI’s ability to reduce infrastructure complexity,
promote consolidation, and allow IT teams to
support an organization's business objectives.
Revenue from hyperconverged systems grew
78% year over year during the period, generat-
ing $1.5 billion in sales. This amounted to 41% of
the total converged systems market, according
to IDC.
One of the bigger selling points of hypercon-
vergence is that it gives IT administrators greater
visibility and control over the computing, storage,
networking, and virtualization components of
their data centers. The software-defi ned data
center infrastructure enabled by HCI provides
more fl exibility and scalability, which allows com-
panies to remain agile and respond more quickly
to changing market conditions.
