Hastings Live returning this summer; lineup announced
Hastings Live is returning in 2021. It may
look different than it has in the past, such as
possible tickets being offered for some events
and venue changes for others, but music is
expected to return to downtown Hastings.
“We are thrilled to be hosting Hastings
Live again,” Thornapple Arts Council
Executive Director Megan Lavell said. “We’re
making safety our first priority as we move
forward with our 2021 programming.
“We know this season is going to feeldifferent than years past, and we appreciate
everyone following the safety protocols to
keep the community safe and keep the
program going all summer.”
Hastings Downtown Development Director
Dan King said city staff has been working
with the Barry-Eaton District Health
Department, City Police, and the department
of public services to safely plan the Hastings
Live season.
Hastings Live includes the Hastings CityBand, community concerts, Fridays at the
Fountain, and Friday Night Features, Hastings
Live at Summerfest, and the Playing at the
Plaza Thursday morning children’s
entertainment series.
With the exception of Fridays at the
Fountain on the courthouse lawn, all
performances will be at the Thornapple Plaza.
Moving Playing at the Plaza to the Thornapple
Plaza this summer will allow children and
their families more room to dance, sing, and
play while maintaining social distancing,
organizers said in an April 5 press release.
Hastings Live events will observe what
safety measures are deemed necessary when
the series begins. While all events will remain
free, some may be ticketed to limit audience
sizes.
“After a yearlong void of many activities
that we once took for granted, bringing back
Hastings Live performances will be a breath
of fresh air,” King said.
With its ever-changing roster dating back to
pioneer days, Hastings City Band has been
entertaining audiences for more than 160
years. Members range from high schoolers to
musicians in their 70s and 80s, who gather for
five weeks, launching the city’s summer
concert season. All Hastings City Band
concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays.
Performance dates are June 2, 9, 16, 23 and- Music for those weeks will be announced
prior to the concerts.

the region’s finest up-and-coming performers,
along with established artists. Friday Night

Chase involving Nashville man ends in
power outage
A 53-year-old Nashville man was arrested after a chase by the Michigan State Police
Monday evening.
State troopers said they attempted to arrest the man at 5:20 p.m. in Barry County, but he
fled in a vehicle. Police ended the pursuit, but shortly afterward, the man crashed into a
utility pole on Kraft Avenue near 76th Street north of Caledonia. Power was knocked out
in the local area.
When troopers arrived, the man had a knife and was threatening to commit suicide. He
was arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the
crash, and for ingesting unknown drugs.Fish finder stolen off vandalized boat
A 40-year-old man called police to report a break-in at his residence in the 5000 block
of Thornapple Lake Road in Castleton Township. Two sheds on the man’s property had
been broken into, and his boat was vandalized with spray paint. The man said he initially
suspected his children had spray-painted the boat, until he noticed the $600 electronic fish
finder was missing. The case is inactive without further leads.Drunken man crashes into fence
Police received a complaint at 10:53 p.m. March 17 from a resident of the 4000 block
of Cedar Creek Road in Hope Township who said a man had crashed in front of their res-
idence. The driver was not injured but did appear to be intoxicated. Police arrived to find
the truck had crashed through a fence and had come to a stop in the road. The driver, 57,
of Delton, told police he swerved to avoid a deer, but admitted to drinking. He had a 0.
blood-alcohol content and was arrested for his second operating while intoxicated offence.Playing cards stolen from Walmart
An unknown man stole $165 worth of Magic: The Gathering playing cards from the
Hastings Walmart at 7:44 p.m. March 6. Employees watched the man take the cards off a
shelf and put them into a backpack he’d taken from the clearance shelf. He then went
through the self-checkout with a 43-year-old Augusta woman who was identified from her
Electronic Benefit Transfer card. Staff confronted the man, but he left before police
arrived. The case remains under investigation.Underage woman rolls car while drinking
A resident of the 6000 block of South M-37 in Baltimore Township called police to
report a woman had crashed in front of a residence. The driver was bleeding from injuries
and appeared to be intoxicated. The caller also reported a motorcycle, which appeared to
be on fire, was in the road. Police arrived and discovered it was not a motorcycle, but the
engine that had flown out of the woman’s vehicle. It appeared the vehicle had slowly
veered off the road before hitting several trees and rolling. The woman, 19, of Hastings,
had a 0.118 blood alcohol content and was arrested.
