The vertebral column
Vertebral groups
The vertebrae are stacked on top of each other. They are grouped into five regions:
7 vertebrae in the neck (called cervical vertebrae)
12 vertebrae in the chest or thorax (called thoracic vertebrae)
5 vertebrae in the lower back (called lumbar vertebrae)
5 vertebrae in the hip region (called sacral vertebrae)
3 to 4 vertebrae in the tail area (called coccygeal vertebrae or coccyx)
