In 1954 atYaleUniversitySchoolofMedicine,M.Lennox,
W.Sibley,andH.Zimmermanplacedthirty-twokittensina
“radiant-heating”chamber.Thekittenswere“subjectedtoa
total of 49 heating periods.... Struggling was common,
particularly asthetemperature rose.”Convulsions occurred
onnineoccasions:“Repeatedconvulsionsweretherule.”As
manyasthirtyconvulsionsoccurredinrapidsequence.Five
kittensdiedduringconvulsions,andsixwithoutconvulsions.
The other kittens were killed by the experimenters for
autopsies. The experimenters reported: “The findings in
artificiallyinducedfeverinkittensconformtotheclinicaland
EEGfindingsinhumanbeingsandpreviousclinicalfindings
in kittens.”^79
The following experiment was performed at the K. G.
MedicalCollege,Lucknow,India.Iincludeitasanexample
ofthetriumphofWesternmethodsofresearchandattitudes
toanimalsovertheancienttraditionofHinduism,whichhas
morerespectfornonhumananimalsthantheJudeo-Christian
tradition.In 1968 K.Wahal,A.Kumar,andP.Nathexposed
forty-six rats to high temperature for four hours. Therats
became restless, breathed with difficulty, and salivated
profusely. One animaldied during theexperiment and the
otherswerekilledbytheexperimentersbecause“theycould
not survive anyway.”^80

Rochester, exposed dogs and rabbits to heat-producing
