Hare, a philosopher Singer cites as one of his greatest
mentors.


ThusbeganSinger’steachingcareer,whichincludedperiods
atOxford,NewYorkUniversity,andMonashUniversity,and
wouldspantheperiodfrom 1971 to1999.Duringthistime,
he achieved international acclaim; Animal Liberation, his
workontheethicsofanimaltreatmentthatpopularizedthe
termspeciesism,waspublishedin 1975 andthrustSingerinto
theglobalspotlight.In 2011 TimeincludedAnimalLiberation
in its All-Time 100 Nonfiction Books list.


Singerwentontopublishmorethanfortybooksdelvinginto
the fundamentals of morality, ethics, abortion, infanticide,
euthanasia, and world poverty, including Practical Ethics
(1979),TheExpandingCircle(1981),HowAreWetoLive?
(1993),and RethinkingLifeandDeath(1994), whichwere
translated into more than twenty-five languages. Many of
Singer’s best works were anthologized in Writings on an
Ethical Life, published in 2000.


Bytheendofthenineties,SingerhadmovedtotheUnited
States after accepting the position of Ira W. DeCamp
Professor ofBioethics intheUniversityCenter forHuman
ValuesatPrincetonUniversity.In 2004 heturnedhiseyeto
theBushadministration,releasingThePresidentofGoodand
Evil inthelead-up tothat year’spresidential election.The
book further expanded his readership, putting him at the
centerofcontemporarydebate.Duringthesameyear,Singer
was recognized as the Australian Humanist of the Year.
