allow users to monitor and even block access
to their services. Placed in this context, most
mobility concepts read as platforms for pro-
crastination rather than productivity.
There are signs that at least some
within the industry are taking note. Audi’s
recent 25th Hour Project is named after the
50 or so minutes commuters currently ‘waste’
behind the wheel. Conducted in partnership
with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial
Engineering, the project tested how envi-
ronmental design impacts people’s ability
to concentrate on tasks in-car. It did this
either by subjecting participants to the sort
of digital bombardment that we currently
self-prescribe via our phone screens or by
offering a more muted interior. Unsurpris-
ingly, the latter was preferred. »
Space10, Ikea’s future-living lab, believes
that self-driving vehicles should place less
emphasis on interior technology.
